Most countries in the world have distinct identification symbols for their currency – $ represents the US Dollar, £ is used for GBP, € for Euro, etc. but there’s still no official currency sign for the Indian Rupee.
Design the India Rupee Symbol – Public contest
While symbols like Rs and रू are commonly used to represent the Indian Rupee, these are no official currency signs and therefore the Government of India has now announced a public contest to pick up a sign that will represent the currency of India.
You may send the symbol on an A-4 size paper in black and white print and that the size of the final currency symbol design should not be smaller than 36 sq inches.
The symbol has to be either in the Indian National Language Script or a visual representation but should be applicable to the standard computer keyboard. The Government also wants to ensure that your Indian Rupee design represents the historical and cultural ethos of India.
How to Use Indian Currency
It’s been over a month since the new Indian rupee symbol designed by Bombay IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar, has been approved by the cabinet. The Indian currency, backed by an over-trillion dollar economy finally made its presence felt on the international scene. The unique symbol — a blend of the Devanagri ‘Ra’ and Roman ‘R’ — joining elite currencies like the US dollar, euro, British pound and Japanese yen in have its distinct identity.
Now if one must use it for a purpose, must he use the symbol in place of an Rs. Foradian Technologies has come up with a nice trick to enable you to type the symbol from your key board.
Just follow the simple steps.
Steps
1 .Download the zip file Rupee font installer.rar version 3 (or you can go for the older version .
2.Extract the files. (You will need winrar or winzip installed in your PC to extract the files)
3.Double click on the Rupee_Font_Installer.exe
4.Click on “Install” button and the font is installed
5.Your job is done
6.To use it just select the rupee foradian font from the font drop down and use the ~ button (above the tab button and on the left of numerical 1 button)
A point here is, if you are using the symbol in some document and sending it over to somebody who does not have this font installed, may not see the symbol. so spread the word
